 The amphos, also known as grouper, is distinguished by its large size, robust body and remarkable longevity, being able to live for several decades.
 

 
 It inhabits rocky seabeds and Posidonia seagrass meadows, where it finds refuge in caves and crevices. Its presence in the waters surrounding Formentera's beaches is an indicator of the richness and good condition of the marine ecosystem.
