 Every spring and early summer, numerous fin whales cross the Balearic Sea during their migration from more southerly areas to their plankton-rich feeding grounds in the northwestern Mediterranean. The channel between Ibiza, Formentera, and the Iberian Peninsula, as well as the waters north of Mallorca and Menorca, are particularly important for this species.
 
 
 In fact, due to its ecological value, the marine corridor connecting the Iberian Peninsula with the Balearic Islands was declared the Mediterranean Cetacean Migration Corridor as a protected marine area. Its objective is to conserve the migratory route of whales and other cetaceans against threats such as maritime traffic, underwater noise, and acoustic surveys.
 
 
 In addition to the fin whale, other species can be observed in the Balearic waters, including:
 
 
 * sperm whale
 
 * common pilot whale
 
 * striped dolphin
 
 * bottlenose dolphin
 
 
 The Balearic Islands are home to one of the greatest diversities of cetaceans in the Mediterranean, with around a dozen species recorded regularly or occasionally.
