The artichoke, or cultivated artichoke, is grown for its edible part, which is harvested before the flower opens. Its flower heads are large and fleshy, with slightly spiny leaves.

The wild artichoke, or carxofa borda, grows spontaneously in dry, open areas. It has smaller flower heads, rougher, spinier leaves, and a more wild appearance.

The two are closely related and are part of the Mediterranean flora.
