 The escars, or slipways, are traditional constructions used to take small fishing boats out of the water and protect them.
 

 
 They were built taking advantage of small, sheltered areas along the coast. Their main feature was a set of inclined wooden rails on which the boat slid. At the top, there could be a small cabin, built with wood, stone, and other local materials, to protect it from the sun and bad weather.
 

 
 This system was linked to fishing and daily life on the island. Many of these boatyards are still preserved and form part of Formentera's ethnological heritage. They were declared a Site of Cultural Interest (BIC) in 2002.
