The John Dory, also known as the St. Peter's fish, is one of the most recognizable fish in the Mediterranean. Its most striking feature is the dark spot on each side of its body.
According to popular Christian tradition, this stain resembles the fingerprints of Saint Peter. Legend has it that Jesus asked Saint Peter to take a coin from a fish's mouth to pay a tribute. When he picked up the fish, his fingerprints were left on its sides, creating the mark that is still there.
Beyond the legend, the Saint Peter's rooster is part of the maritime culture of the Balearic Islands, where it is appreciated for its white and delicate meat and for its presence in the traditional cuisine of the islands.
