 This fish has different names depending on the region. In the Balearic Islands it is known as xoriguer, while in Spanish it is commonly called golondrina. Both names refer to its large pectoral fins, which, when spread, resemble open wings.
 

 
 It is also called the snorer because of the deep sound or snore that it can make when it vibrates its swim bladder, a characteristic present in this species.
